As the days get shorter and the light lessens, I am grateful that Light Art Space is able to continue to share meaningful art with Silver City and our visitors. I appreciate your support and encouragement this past year and wish all of you a season full of love and compassion.

This Saturday is LOVE LOCAL small business Saturday!   All purchases under $500 are tax-free! In addition, Light Art Space artists are offering a 10% discount on all our artwork (cards excluded). This is the perfect day to shop for gifts for your loved ones or yourself!  We are open 11 – 5.

Stop by the gallery for the final week to view the Fiercely Independent exhibition featuring 23 independent artists from the Silver City Arts Association. Friday and Saturday 11 am. -5 pm and Sunday 10 – 2.

Our next exhibition, LAS TEN will feature the work of Light Art Space artists. The opening reception will be 5 – 7 pm on December 1st (also the First Friday at the Galleries).

I am grateful to have shared nine wonderful years with my beloved, Flash. He was the perfect gallery greeter and the best companion I could ever dream of. Flash spent the first 5 years of his life as a breeder dog in Phoenix, not an easy or desirable life.  I feel so blessed to have found him and will cherish our time together. He is missed by many and will live on in my heart. I am sharing with you a few of my favorite photos of him.

Reception Friday

Join us Friday, October 6th from 5 – 7 p.m. as we celebrate the opening of two new printmaking exhibitions.

H2O: Shifting Currents, a juried exhibition of handmade prints. Water is essential to life, without fixed form, reflective, a conductor, and wet. It can represent cleansing, purity, power, wisdom, an open heart and mind, and change. After three years of constant change and uncertainty involving much pain and loss, this call asked artists to consider water and what it can represent.

Juror Kristen Martincic chose 33 images by 23 artists from across the United States. This exhibition is part of the Silver City Print Fiesta.

Phoenix Ink: New and Eclectic Image, prints by Kim Boege, Wendy Willis, Marlys Kubicek, Paulette Olive, and Donna Atwood.

Exhibition dates for both:
October 5th – Nov. 4th, 2023
Friday, October 6th, 5 – 7 pm. Reception, Juror talk 5:30 – 6:30 pm

Also, on view at Light Art Space is work in various media by the Light Art Space Artists: Joel Armstrong, Joe Huebner, Karen Hymer, Kathleen Koopman, Rhonda Munzinger, Art Peterson, Susan Porter, Eric Renner, Nancy Spencer, Juan Velasco.

Poetry Reading and Book Signing

Join us tomorrow, Friday, September 29th from 5 pm – 7 pm as we welcome Taos Poet Lawrence Gregory.  Lawrence will read a selection of pieces from his newest collection, Phenomena (2023, Shanti Arts), and answer audience questions, followed by a book signing.
Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Reviews of Phenomena:

“In this superb collection, Lawrence Gregory has come dancing into the light. The poems are full of eternal truths about nature, humanity, and finding peace amid the cacophony. Phenomenal.” – JJ Amaworo Wilson, author of Nazaré

“Lawrence Gregory’s latest volume of poetry, Phenomena, reminds us again and again that the world and our lives are never ordinary, or to be taken for granted. Our lives are surrounded by scores of phenomena, if we only take the time to look. This collection pays close attention.” – David Dragone, Editor-in-Chief, Crosswinds Poetry Journal

September News

Five years ago today Light Art Space opened with an exhibition of my work, Age & Seduction, hand-printed photogravures. It has been an interesting and rewarding journey! The pandemic was a major challenge but we have persevered thanks to support from the Silver City community, local collectors, the Light Art Space artists, and Main Street Programs. In our five years, we have featured over 60 exhibitions (most featuring work from across the United States and other countries), 30 workshops (many taught by out-of-town artists),  and numerous other events.  It has been a joy to collaborate with Silver City local organizations including the Silver City Clay Festival, the Southwest Print Fiesta, the Silver City Art Association, and the SW Festival of the Written Word. I want to thank my friends and family who constantly encourage me on this journey, all the Silver City artists/citizens who have participated in exhibitions and workshops, our local collectors, the tourists who have wandered in and recognized the quality of art on display, and everyone who supports the arts in Silver City.  We continue to represent our fabulous local artists: Kathleen Koopman, Karen Hymer, Joe Huebner, Juan Velasco, Art Peterson, Rhonda Munzinger, Susan H. Porter, Nancy Spencer, Eric Renner, and Joel Armstrong, and always have their work on display. Onward we go…

Exhibitions

Tonight, from 5 pm – 7 pm, we are hosting a reception for the Silver City Red Dot Studio Tour exhibition.  Stop in to view the work of artists who will be opening up their studios to the public tomorrow and Sunday. This is a great opportunity to see artwork and choose which studios to visit over the weekend or choose a piece in the gallery and take it home with you! Our wonderful community radio station, KURU, will be broadcasting live from the gallery giving voice to the arts!

Also on view is the juried exhibition: The Still(ed) Life: Celebrating Handmade Photographic Art.  These handmade photographs are extraordinary in both technique and content.
