Where did June go? The summer solstice has past, the moon is full, and we are praying for rain and looking forward to a wetter July and August. The tragic fires in Ruidoso remind us here in Silver City how vulnerable we are living in the dry forest. Our hearts go out to all affected by the fires and we send gratitude to the amazing firefighters who are hard at work.
At Light Art Space we invite you to the final week of our two nature exhibitions: Four Artists Celebrating Wilderness, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Jane Seavers, Fred Barraza, Gay Scheibl, and Paul Hotvedt, and Inspirations From the Wild, an exhibition of Photography and Clay works by Karen Hymer and Zoe Wolfe.
The final day to view thees exhibitions in next Saturday, June 29th.

We have a few Mata Ortiz pieces still available for purchase. This is a special fundraiser benefiting our local non-profit, Border Justice Project. Prices have been reduced – these will make wonderful gifts!
The Border Justice Project (BJP) provides shelter, food, clothing, toys, medicine, and care for thousands of migrants in Deming, NM, and Palomas (Chih.), Mexico.
This volunteer group accepts donations and monetary support from individuals and is grateful for the donation of this beautiful pottery.
Mata Ortiz pottery is a derivation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquimé) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, near the archeological site. The style was developed by Juan Quezada who learned on his own to recreate the ancient pottery and then went on to update it. By the mid-1970s, Quezada was selling pottery and teaching family and friends to make it.
This fundraiser is part of Give Grandly. 100% of any purchase of Mata Ortiz pottery will go to the Border Justice Project and will be matched by a generous BJP supporter.

Border to Border, Stephan Höglund New Works
Jewelry and Photography
Stephan’s work comes from a sense of place or more accurately, places. Gleaming both inspiration as well as surface found material of his region. He considers himself a “Regionalist just as the Canadian “Group of Seven” or even Emily Carr or Georgia O’Keefe did. Northern Minnesota is where it first began and he now continues in the open High Mesa and High Desert of Southwest New Mexico near Silver City. These places not only have been the source of the materials in much of the work but also seem to sustain a creative and spiritual roadmap.
Exhibition Dates: March 1 – March 31
Reception Friday, March 1, 5 – 7 pm
Gallery hours: Thursday – Saturday 11 am – 5 pm, Sundays 10 am – 2 pm, Frist Fridays 11 am – 7 pm, and by appointment.

Restoring The Pitchfork Ranch, by A.T. Cole
The Pitchfork Ranch is more than another dusty homestead tucked away in a corner of the Southwest. It is a place with a story to tell about the most pressing crisis to confront humankind. It is a place where one couple is working every day to right decades of wrongs. It is a place of inspiration and promise. It is an invitation to join the struggle for a better planet.
Restoring the Pitchfork Ranch tells the story of a decades-long habitat restoration project in southwestern New Mexico. A. Thomas Cole explains what inspired him and his wife, Lucinda, to turn their retirement into years dedicated to hard work and renewal. The book shares the past and present history of a very special ranch south of Silver City, which is home to a rare type of regional wetland, a fragile desert grassland ecosystem, archaeological sites, and a critical wildlife corridor in a drought-stricken landscape.
As a special treat, original woodcut blocks and prints by Silver City printmaker, David Wait, will be on display during the book launch. David’s woodcuts appear in the book. Prints will be available for purchase.
In celebration of the Gila Wilderness 100 anniversary, this call asks photographers to submit images about wilderness (does not have to be images from the Gila). All types of photography are welcome including Black and white, color, alternative processes, 3 dimensional, etc.
Open to all photographers living in Grant County, New Mexico
