July is flying by, monsoons are in full swing, so it is very cool and beautiful in Silver City. We at Light Art Space are so excited to present two new exhibitions, both opening this weekend.

“The Spirit of Home”, a juried alternative process photography exhibition, will be on display in the North Gallery from July 24th to September 20, 2025.  Juror Annie Lopez selected a diverse range of work, representing various processes by artists from across the country. Drawn & Quartered: The Art of Joel Armstrong

Silver City, NM

Facing his final rite of passage with stage four pancreatic cancer, Joel Armstrong is ever extra in life, and death. Drawn & Quartered: The Art of Joel Armstrong is a retrospective of his artwork across four galleries in historic downtown Silver City, NM. With each venue specially curated by his three children, his 50 years of work spanning interactive installations, wire, rust, paint, colored pencil, assemblage, and collage can be seen at Light Art Space, Seedboat, The Grant County Art Guild Studio, and A Space.

AT LIGHT ART SPACE:

Drawn and Quartered”, a 50-year retrospective of Joel Armstrong’s artwork, will fill Light Art Space.  For fifty years, Joel Armstrong has been a working artist and illustrator. He has worked in a variety of media, including charcoal, colored pencil, wire, rust, and paint. He is known for his dynamic wire installations and realistic portraits. Joel has been an artist at Ligth Art Space since 2019. He is a beloved member of our family and the community of Silver City. We are honored to present his life’s work.

Join us this Saturday, July 26th, for the opening reception from 4 – 8 pm.

Exhibition dates: July 25 – August 16th.

Blurring The Lines

Call for handmade prints!
This call invites artists to explore the aspects of their work that blur or transcend specific boundaries or lines.   Do elements share some common ground? Or is there a complex weaving of elements, making it hard to separate or identify them individually?  What is obscured and what is revealed?

All entries must be handmade prints created by the artist using traditional printmaking and/or photographic processes and must have been produced within the last 5 years.  3D and experimental work is encouraged. Any combination of methods may be employed including but not limited to silkscreen, letterpress, calligraphy, etching, woodcut, lithography, linocut, drypoint, mezzotint, monoprint, polymer plates, silver gelatin prints, photopolymer gravure, copperplate gravure, cyanotype, vandyke, gumbichromate, palladium, platinum, carbon, salt, wet plate, chemigram, lumen, argrotype, oilprint, chlorophyll, instant transfers, and lifts. AI-generated images will not be accepted.

**Digital photographic images can be combined with other processes, but straight digital prints will not be accepted.

Transform an existing book into a unique art object using a variety of techniques and media!
This class encourages creativity and exploration, allowing individuals to personalize books through a variety of methods and materials—no previous experience required. Altered books provide a fun and imaginative way to explore art and self-expression by transforming ordinary books into unique art objects.

Photopolymer Gravure Workshop with Karen Hymer

Sunday, October 132h 9 am – 4 pm
$175 plus tax. All materials included.

Learn the art of photopolymer gravure printing from visual artist and Director of Light Art Space, Karen Hymer. In this one-day workshop, participants will create gravure etching prints from their photographs.  Using light-sensitive steel-backed polymer plates, you will experience how this environmentally friendly process translates photographic detail into ink on paper with unparalleled beauty.

No prior experience with printmaking is required. All necessary aspects of printmaking will be discussed, including choosing inks, papers, and wiping material. Wiping and inking techniques will be covered.  You take home 5- 7 photogravure prints of your images.
