First Friday Mata Ortiz Pottery Fundraiser, Workshops, Call for Work and Nigel

May Greetings!
Summer is coming along with many exciting events.

Currently on view at Light Art Space are two exhibitions that
Commemorate the Gila Wilderness 100 anniversary.

Four Artists Celebrating Wilderness, is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Jane Seavers, Fred Barraza, Gay Scheibl, and Paul Hotvedt. These four Silver City artists interpret the wilderness in their work. Curated by Paul Hotvedt.

Inspirations From the Wild is an exhibition of Photography and Clay works by Karen Hymer and Zoe Wolfe.

Exhibition Dates: April 4 – June 2, 2024

Join us for the First Friday Gallery Walk on May 3rd from 5 – 7 pm. We will feature numerous beautiful Mata Ortiz pieces as a special fundraiser benefiting our local non-profit, Border Justice Project.

The Border Justice Project (BJP) provides shelter, food, clothing, toys, medicine, and care for thousands of migrants in Deming, NM, and Palomas (Chih.), Mexico.
This volunteer group accepts donations and monetary support from individuals and is grateful for the donation of this beautiful pottery.

Mata Ortiz pottery is a derivation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquimé) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz,  near the archeological site. The style was developed by Juan Quezada who learned on his own to recreate the ancient pottery and then went on to update it. By the mid-1970s, Quezada was selling his pottery and teaching family and friends to make it.

This is a great opportunity to purchase unique pieces at excellent prices while supporting an important local non-profit. The sales will go through June 2nd, 2024.

This fundraiser is part of Give Grandly. 100% of any purchase of Mata Ortiz pottery will go to the Border Justice Project and will be matched by a generous BJP supporter.

There is still space in these three upcoming workshops:

We are delighted to welcome back North Carolina artist, Diana Bloomfield, to teach a three-day
