Sun Printing Cyanotype Workshop with Karen Hymer_June 6th, 2021

Learn the art of cyanotype sun printing from visual artist and Director of Light Art Space, Karen Hymer.

Cyanotype photograms are one of a kind photographs made using the sun as a light source. This early 19th century process produces prints with beautiful cyan-blue and white tones. We will use leaves, grasses and other natural elements from the ground as our subject matter. Participants will learn to coat watercolor paper with the cyanotype chemicals and, once dry, make photograms by placing the plant items on the paper and exposing to sunlight. Both dry and wet processes will be explored. Each participant will leave with 3 – 5 unique prints.

Instructor Bio:

Karen Hymer was born in Tucson, Arizona and has spent most of her life in the Sonoran desert. She earned her BFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University, Medford and her MA and MFA in Fine Art Photography from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Karen actively exhibits her work both nationally and internationally. Her work is in several public collections, including the Center for Creative Photography and the Polaroid International Collection. Dark Spring Press released the first book of her work in April 2018.

Karen’s experience and technical interests are wide-ranging. Although “trained” as a photographer and educator, her approach to image making explores the blending of photosensitive materials, digital media, and printmaking. In addition to working as a fine art photographer, Karen taught photography for over 25 years at Pima Community College, Tucson.

Karen relocated to Silver City, NM in the summer of 2018 to open and operate Light Art Space at 209 West Broadway.
