Build Your Own Dream Boat

Taught by Kathleen Koopman
Using a variety of abundant recycled materials we will design and create a little dreamy sailboat. Discover the limitless possibilities of simple materials in your hands as they become vehicles for metaphor and exploration.
No experience is needed, just a willingness to play with materials and your imagination, experiment, and dream. Each participant will construct a little sailboat, using recycled materials: cardboard, paper (music and maps), fibers, twigs, twine, and personal found objects. Materials provided include vintage linens, shells, buttons, etc.; participants are encouraged to bring small objects, charms, maps, and symbols that express their personal boat-building intention. Think masts, booms, keels, lines, anchors, knots . . .Remember: anything can be an anchor! Anything can be a mast!
Artist/Teacher Kathleen Koopman’s work focuses on assemblage, combining found objects, rust, maps, music, and old photographs, to discover a narrative with memories and dreams intertwined, exploring metaphors that create ethereal, evocative, and provocative installations.
Part collector, part archeologist, and part researcher, Kathleen delights in the randomly found; she studies and researches, arranges and organizes, then displays and photographs, visually exploring their past and provenance. See her work at LightArtSpace in Silver City, NM.
After a career in book design and illustration, she taught art for twelve years; Kathleen is a recent transplant to Silver City, and is busy working in her studio called The Rusty Nest featuring years of amassed found objects and rust.
