In Shapeshifters, George Rodriguez continues to draw on themes of culture and community. He is exploring historic civilizations, the urban environment, and the monuments we select to represent us.

The headless bodies are recognizable forms inspired by cultural and historical icons: Venus of Willendorf, the Sphinx, and other pinnacle figures central to significant early civilizations. These “Shapeshifters” allow the viewer to imagine alternate and more accurate representations of these figures that are a cute to their personal lived experience.

For this body of work Rodriguez states, “As I worked on these sculptures, the power of a headless statue has also become apparent to me. As monuments around the world are being taken down and reconsidered, people are searching for better representations for their communities.
