Dancing With Tradition
Susan H. Porter
Narrow Cloth has been used in making traditional clothing around the globe for thousands of years. This form of clothing generates virtually no wasted fabric. The construction lines are straight, the sewing minimal, and when wider fabrics are required, they are constructed by butting two or more lengths of narrow cloth together and joining them with hand stitching.
As a handweaver, all my weaving fits into the category of Narrow Cloth. I am inspired by the ingenuity and creativity of my weaving ancestors, and the beauty and simplicity of their traditional clothing, styles which continue to be worn today in many indigenous cultures.
This exhibit is my homage to traditional clothing from various cultures, using less traditional fibers and dyes to create more modern garments. The inspiration for the pieces displayed here comes from indigenous cultures of the Southern Americas and East Asia, and thus, I was able to dance with their traditions.
Thank you for helping me honor my weaving ancestors.
