Carmen Ruiz Bio
Carmen Ruiz is an award-winning professional studio artist and bilingual art educator. She works in printmaking, art photography, mixed-media, graphic design, painting, clay, paper and wood sculpture, and drawing. Ruiz is a private art tutor to very young award-winning students and an art instructor with public and private schools and educational institutions. She is the founder and director of the Summer Art Camp for Young Artists in Silver City.
Originally from Buenos Aires Argentina, Ruiz is attracted to city images, architecture and its contrasts being one of her favorite subjects. This preference is reflected in her image choices, whether she is working in photography, printmaking, or with 3-D projects.
As a trained graphic designer and art photographer, Carmen not only looks at light and what it does when composing a B&W photograph but, she also loves to work with color! Her latest efforts have been focused on two approaches: a black and red big-city series and small town colorful series both of architectural mono prints.
All based on her life experiences, her mono prints are impressions of Buenos Aires and Silver City. When she is done printing a series, she chooses to “cancel” her printing blocks by assembling them into a 3-D wall construction. She can no longer print with them but the wood blocks have a new life!

Carmen Ruiz es artista plástica, premiada, dedicada también a la educación artística bilingüe. Trabaja en grabado, fotografía artística, medios mixtos, diseño gráfico, pintura, barro, esculturas de papel y de madera, y dibujo. Ruiz is maestra particular de arte para niños, y enseña en escuelas públicas, privadas y en instituciones de educación como museos. Ruiz estableció el programa Campamento de Arte de Verano para Artistas Jóvenes en Silver City.
Nacida en Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ruiz prefiere imágenes urbanas y la arquitectura, con sus contrastes, es su materia favorita. Esta preferencia se refleja en su elección de imágenes con las que trabaja, ya sea en fotografía, grabado o en sus proyectos 3-D.
Entrenada en diseño gráfico y en fotografía artística, Carmen no solo se fija en el contraste de luz y sombra cuando hace fotos en blanco y negro, por ejemplo, sino que también le interesa mucho el color. En sus obras mas recientes, monotipos y 3-D construcciones arquitectónicas, Carmen utiliza ambas perspectivas: tintas negra y roja, de cualidades sobrias, para la gran ciudad, y tintas de colores, de cualidades brillantes y alegres, para pueblo pequeño.
Basados en sus experiencias, los monotipos son impresiones de Buenos Aires, Argentina y de Silver City, New Mexico, USA. Cuando Ruiz ya ha usado las matrices de madera para varias series de grabados, ella prefiere cancelarlas de manera original y única: construye obras 3-D con las piezas usadas!
